WE WILL CONTINUE IN OUR EFFORT TO SOLVE ACCOMMODATION PROBLEM FOR STAFF AND STUDENTS – UI VC

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka, has reiterated that the University Management will continue to look for ways of solving accommodation challenges of staff and students on campus.

Prof. Olayinka said this at the commissioning of the converted/unused garages to residential quarters at Amina Way for staff.

The VC said: “The newly built six one-bedroom flats is the initiative of the Senior Staff Housing Committee (SSHC) with its creative approach to converting moribund garages to befitting residential quarters for teaching and non-teaching staff.”

“There is a lot of pressure from people who are interested in accommodation on campus. It is very convenient to live on campus. Right from the beginning, UI was conceived as a residential University. Good accommodation will lead to increased productivity. The committee, I believe, will soon move round the Faculties and other places on campus for what can still be done to improve living on campus”, he said.

He appreciated the occupants of the quarters who originally owned the garages for ceding these garages for the necessary conversion, noting that “this is part of the effort to increase the number of residential houses on campus.”

Prof. Olayinka assured the housing committee of the continued support of the University Management for such laudable projects, stressing that “the Amina Way project is the fourth in series of such initiative; the others being Elliot Close, Phillipson Road and Kurunmi Road to solving the accommodation challenge of seventeen families on campus.”

Speaking, the Chairman, Senior Staff Housing Committee (SSHC), Prof. Musiliu Onilude disclosed that “the committee experimented with the project and it works out at Amina Way which is the longest road on campus. We approached the occupants of the blocks on the unused garages and willingly released them to us. We sunk two boreholes for them in return. The completion period is eight weeks.

He thanked the University management for supporting the initiative.

The beneficiaries were recognised at the ceremony.
Present at the occasion were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Kayode Adebowale; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Adebola Ekanola; University Librarian, Dr. Helen Komolafe-Opadeji; Bursar, Dr. Micheal Alatise; Director of Works and Maintenance, Engr. Olufemi Adetolu ably represented by the Deputy Director of Works and Maintenance, Engr. Jimoh Bello; Deputy Registrar, Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Mr. Oluwole Dada; Director, Directorate of Public Communication, Mr. Olatunji Oladejo; Chief Security Officer, Mr. Victor Fadeyibi and the Chairman, Technical Committee, Senior Staff Housing Committee, Dr. Adedapo Adewole.
