VISIT BY THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW STUDENTS TO THE VICE-CHANCELLOR, PROFESSOR ABEL IDOWU OLAYINKA IN HIS OFFICE ON THURSDAY, 09 AUGUST, 2018
The University of Ibadan Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka, FAS, today Thursday, 09 August 2018 received fellows from Department of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, United Kingdom.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof A.I. Olayinka, while receiving the Ph.D. students from University of Glasgow: Ms. Sofiat Olaosebikan, Mr. William Thomas Wallis, Mr. Benjamin Bumpus, Ms. Fatma Elsafoury and Tutor, Mrs. Fconnuala Johnson, said Ms. Sofiat Olaosebikan has made UI proud, having graduated and continuing with her education; first at Ghana for her masters, and later to the Department of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, through an award for scholarship. Her academic performance and commitment has paved way for her, and the University of Glasgow, on her integrity sponsored her and three more students and one tutor to University of Ibadan, to give back to her Alma Mata, since Monday, 30 July to Friday,10 August 2018 through a programme entitled “Programming Workshop for Scientists in Africa”. The Vice-Chancellor appreciated the initiative of this gem; Sofia Olaosebikan.
The leader of the group, who doubled as a graduate of the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, University of Ibadan, Ms. Sofiat Olaosebikan said she decided that her coming home should not only be to visit her people and enjoy Nigerian delicacy, but to also give back to the University that has contributed to her greatness. She said their coming to train ninety (90) students from all the departments in the Faculty of Science has also added to them too; her fellows have been able to learn the African culture being their first time of visiting Africa. She is currently the leader of the Nigerian students in the University of Glasgow. She, therefore, requested for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Ibadan; requesting the University of Ibadan to write her school in the UK, to request for support, through which a MoU would be signed.
While introducing Ms. Sophia Olaosebikan, the Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof Folorunso Ogundare said she has made the University of Ibadan great and her seriousness has brought about the celebration and opportunity. The Acting Head, Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science also said her performance while in UI has been great and she participated in politics and won awards.
Present at the occasion were members of the Faculty of Science; First Female Professor of Mathematics, Prof Olabisi Ugbebor; Department of Physics, Mr. Dauda Dikko and Mr. Akeju Adeyemi.
