HISTORY OF THE SPORTS COUNCIL
The Sports Council as a Committee of the Senate was established in 1968 with the sole responsibility for the organisation and administration of sports in this University. The Director of Sports is responsible for the day to day running of sports at the Sports Centre under the Directorate system, which came into existence in1989. There are two existing Sports Complexes in the University and there locations are at:
1. Old Sports Complex:
Embedded between the Faculty of Education and the Kenneth Dike Library and the Faculty of the Social Sciences .The complex accommodates the Sports Centre office with sports facilities spread between the student’s Union building and the Faculty of the Social Sciences (Tennis, Volleyball, Handball, Basketball courts, Hockey Pitch and Cricket Pavilion)
II. The New Sports Complex: located near Obafemi Awolowo Hall and it accommodates three sporting facilities at present:
(a)Football pitch
(b) Rubberized 10 lane track (Tartan).
(c) Gamaliel Onosode Gymnasium
The University of Ibadan Sports Council provides facilities for all the fifteen (15) approved sporting events by Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA). The sports are Athletics (Track & Field), Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Soccer, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis and Volleyball.

The University of Ibadan maintains a well-rounded programme of sporting and athletic activities on campus under the over-all supervision of the Director of Sports, experienced full-time Coaches and Honorary Coaches from among the academic and administrative staff. Sports for which facilities are available include Athletics (Track and field), Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Tennis, Soccer, Swimming, Squash Racket, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Taekwondo and Chess.

There is spirited competition among the halls of residence and faculties for the possession of the championship cups, especially in Soccer and Athletics. Halls of Residence have facilities for various recreational games including Table Tennis, Badminton, Tennis, Volleyball, Chess and mini soccer pitches.

The University is a member of the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA), the West African Universities Games (WAUG) the Federation of African Universities Sports (FASU) and the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The University participates in both national and international sports competitions organized by these Associations.
It is also good to note that, the emergence of West African Universities Games(WAUG) and Nigerian Universities Games Association(NUGA) games originated from the University of Ibadan in 1965 and 1966 respectively, that was why the first editions were held on the soil of U.I. Also, University of Ibadan has recorded a Landmark by hosting NUGA games at different four editions:
*1966
*1976
*1986 and
*2002

The responsibility for the administration of Sports in the University is vested in a broad-based Sports Council headed by the Vice-Chancellor. He is usually represented by a Professor. The body serves as the governing body for sports and advises on proper principles of University policy on sports.
Other programmes of Directorate of Sports Council includes:
(a) Intramural and Extramural Sports programme,
(b) Age-group Summer Sports Programme(AGSSP)
(c) The Annual Inter-Halls and Inter-Faculties Programme,
(d) Community Staff Games.
All these inform that, the Sports Council programmes take care of Students, Staff members and the entire University Community.

The University has a Sports Centre which is open at the following times: Monday to Friday, 7.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m and public holidays:
(a) 7- 11.30am for Academic programme,
(b) 12- 4.30pm for Recreational programme,
(c) 4.30-7.00pm Versity Swimmers programme. The Coaches are available at all times to give further information and assistance to students. They can be contacted at the Sports Centre.

Apart from maintaining a sound body which is an asset for advanced thinking and rigorous academic pursuit, students have the added advantage of exposure to modern facilities and techniques through active participation in the variety of sports with teams representing Nigeria in International competitions, like WAUG, FISU and Universiade Games. The University maintains bilateral annual friendly competitions in some selected sports with the University of Ghana, Legon and Universite du Benin, Togo.
Recently, one of our Coaches Ms. Arinye, Cecilia Dora was appointed as the Director of Sports, University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria.
