C-CAMH!!!

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has awarded a grant to the University of Ibadan to establish a Centre that will support the “Building Up of Child and Adolescent Mental Health” capacity in the African region and beyond. The Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (C-CAMH) is a multi-disciplinary centre within the University of Ibadan

Objectives

The Centre will fulfill the following objectives:

1. Develop a forum for a multi-professional, multidisciplinary, multi-agency team of trainers, researchers, policy makers, practitioners, providers and recipients to work together to improve child and adolescent mental health (CAMH)

2. Supply the African region with skilled leaders to provide CAMH advocacy and policy development, culturally relevant and competent CAMH care, expertise in the development of services in community and clinical settings, training of professionals and paraprofessionals and developing proficiency in CAMH research methods

3. Support the development of training, research and service in CAMH in Nigeria and other African countries

4. Promote the integration of research, policy and practice in child and adolescent public mental health in the African region

5. Develop, monitor and evaluate child and adolescent public mental health programmes in the African region

Courses

The Centre operates the following programmes:

· Master of Science programme in Child and Adolescent Mental Health (MSc. CAMH)

· Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Child and Adolescent Mental Health (PgDip. CAMH)

· Short courses in CAMH to be announced at ccamh.ui.edu.ng.

Faculty From Across Four Continents

In addition to the core faculty from within the University of Ibadan, guest faculty from other world class centres across the four continents of Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America will provide support for the development of this Centre of Excellence in Child and Adolescent Mental Health. International guest faculty are outstanding lecturers from:

1. Boston University through the Section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Boston Medical Centre (BMC), an affiliate, United States of America

2. Harvard Medical School through the Children’s Hospital Global Partnerships in Psychiatry at Children’s Hospital Boston (CHB), United States of America

3. Sangath, a non-governmental organisation in Goa, India

4. Imperial College London, through the Academic Unit of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, United Kingdom

5. University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa

West African Universities within and outside Nigeria that will partner with and receive support through the programmes to be anchored by this Centre include:

Academic Master of Science Degree Programme in Child and Adolescent Mental Health

(MSc. CAMH)

Training Objectives

Non-Clinical Aspects

1. Proficiency in the stages required to develop and support services and programmes for child mental health especially in schools, primary health care (PHC) and the community

2. Proficiency in the development of child mental health policy

3. Proficiency in advocating child and adolescent mental health

4. Expertise in training other health professionals paraprofessionals in child mental health care

5. Proficiency in quantitative and qualitative research methodologies needed for CAMH

Clinical Skills

1. Proficiency in child development and developmental psychopathology

2. Proficiency in the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of common child and adolescent mental health problems

3. Proficiency in applying the multiple perspectives of biological, psychological and social issues to the assessment and management of child and adolescent mental health problems

4. Expertise in culturally relevant and competent care for children and adolescents mental health within the unique cultural context of West Africa

Regulations

Admission Requirements

Students will be admitted to the M.Sc. programme in accordance with the regulations and the requirements of the University of Ibadan

A Bachelor’s Degree with a second class lower (2-2) and above, Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) will be the minimum entry requirement. Therefore graduates of Medicine, Psychology, Nursing, Social Work, Education, Physiotherapy, and Occupational Therapy can apply. Experience with working with children will be an added advantage.

Registration

Candidates for the M.Sc. CAMH are required to complete the registration formality within the period stipulated by the Postgraduate School of the University of Ibadan.

Duration and mode of study

This programme is designed to be a full time 18-month programme consisting of 3 semesters. The first two semesters will be spent in the University of Ibadan while the last and third semester will be spent in the students’ home base, collecting data and writing up a thesis. There will be opportunities for study for short periods of time in guest faculty institutions. See ccamh.ui.edu.ng for more details.

Tuition

The tuition fees are $1000 (N150,000.00) for Nigerians and $5000.00 for foreign students. Scholarships are available for outstanding candidates from collaborating West African Universities.
