"UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN IS COMMITTED TO VEGETATION CONSERVATION," SAYS REGISTRAR
The Registrar of the University of Ibadan, Mr Ganiyu O. Saliu, fspsp, has reiterated the university's dedication to conserving campus vegetation, and promoting a greener environment to enhance the well-being of individuals.
Mr Saliu made these statements on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, during a courtesy visit by representatives of Polaris Bank PLC and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF).
Mr Saliu noted that the large number of Iroko trees on the University of Ibadan campus is an evidence of the university's intentional conservation efforts, in the face of broader environmental challenges across Nigeria and globally.
He explained that the university does not permit indiscriminate felling of trees but enforces a structured process for any removal.
The Registrar also stated that as part of the UI@75 Anniversary celebrations, the university initiated a project to plant 1,000 trees to be adopted by well-meaning Nigerians for sustainance with the university providing the necessary support.
He stressed the importance of collaboration between the academia and the community, stating that to tackle shared environmental issues, both sectors must work together.
Mr Saliu expressed appreciation for the collective efforts of organisations to address common challenges in Nigeria and appreciated Polaris Bank PLC for its partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation in the tree planting initiative.
The Executive Director, Corporate and Investment Banking of Polaris Bank PLC., Mrs Abimbola Ozomah, explained that the initiative was borne out of the Bank's desire to continuously make a positive impact on the environment and communities, as well as to commemorate the World Environment Day of 05 June 2024.
She noted that the theme for the World Environment Day 2024 focused on land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience to align with the UN ecosystem restoration goals.
Mrs Ozomah stated that Polaris Bank PLC was committed to sustainable practices and land restoration by planting economic trees nationwide.
According to her, the Bank's sustainability practices involve promoting responsible banking, empowering people and society, addressing environmental issues, and sustaining economic growth.
Mr Adedayo Memudu, the Senior Manager of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, stated that the organisation encourages Nigerian citizens to appreciate nature, and also to prosper while living in harmony with it.
He noted that one of the NCF's pillars is its dedication to partnership development, which is the reason for its partnering with Polaris Bank PLC to enhance the Bank's Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainability platforms.
The courtesy visit was followed by the symbolic planting of trees at a designated site on the university campus.
A Memorandum of Understanding will be signed later by the University, Polaris Bank Ltd and the Nigerian Conservation Foundation.
