ABSTRACT

The lecture addresses the three major challenges usually encountered by persons with hearing impairment (or hearing loss) namely, difficulties of hearing, speaking and learning. The objective of the lecture is, therefore, to demonstrate how assistive technology and auditory-speech training are engaged by specialists in the education and rehabilitation of persons with hearing impairment, to eliminate the hearing, speaking and learning limitations caused by hearing disability. The characterisation of each challenge, its specific effects on social, psychological and intellectual activities of the affected, as well as how these challenges interface with one another are explored by the lecture. The lecture also showcases how assistive devices like hearing aids, cochlear implants and auditory-speech trainers are engaged in aural rehabilitation procedures to enable persons with hearing impairment regain first, the ability to hear, then to speak and learn. The procedures continue until the affected are able to attain wellness in hearing, speaking and learning as envisioned in the topic of this lecture. The lecturer, thereafter, presents his contributions to knowledge in the field of education and rehabilitation of persons with hearing impairment, achievements and challenges of his Department and concludes by making some recommendations, necessary for repositioning his Department for improved services to persons with special needs.
