ACCELERATED DEVELOPMENT THROUGH INNOVATION

ACCELERATED DEVELOPMENT THROUGH INNOVATION

PREFACE FROM THE VICE CHANCELLOR UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN.

Candidates applying for the position of Vice-Chancellor in the Nigerian University System are often required to submit a Vision and Mission document detailing their agenda for the duration of their tenure, which for the Federal Universities is a non-renewable term of five years. The 11th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan is to complete his stint on November 30, 2015. As a potential candidate for the position, I had to prepare such a document. As would be expected, I consulted some of the available literature on the growth and development of the institution since its establishment some 67 years ago. I made extensive consultation with members of staff (academic and non-teaching), students, alumni and friends of the university on how to tackle the prospects and challenges in re-positioning the University of Ibadan. Many colleagues submitted memorandum on how to re-position our dear institution. Their various views were synthesized in order to produce a coherent picture. What follows in this publication is essentially the content of the Vision and Mission document I submitted to the Governing Council of the University of Ibadan in May 2015. It is hoped that this would form the road map of the administration of the university over the next five years. As some of the problems we have to contend with at Ibadan are similar to those faced by other universities in the country, it is hoped that colleagues from sister institutions may also find the document useful.
