UI TO ESTABLISH FACULTY OF NURSING – VC
The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka, has confirmed the possibility of the present Department of Nursing, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine being transformed into a Faculty.
The VC disclosed this today at a petite ceremony for the turning of the sod of a new auditorium for the Department.
According to him, “with the situation that the Department works assiduously towards the attainment of a world-class status and when people demand for your programme the ideal thing is to expand by improving on the infrastructure and manpower. The Department can transform into a Faculty. Why not? We must be ready to do it”. Prof. Olayinka sought for the collaboration of the University, College of Medicine and the alumni on the new direction. “We need to collaborate and move the University forward.”
The VC appreciated the outgoing Head of Department, Prof. Prisca Adejumo, for her effectiveness and commitment to the progress of the Department and wished her well in her future endeavours.
The new Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. Olayinka Omigbodun, was delighted for the opportunity to carry out the first administrative work at the Department of Nursing, which according to her “is a good sign for her tenure.”
“I am so excited about the project. It is a sign of good thing for me as the first role as the Provost. We are going to nurse nursing to expand. You will transform into a Faculty during my tenure. I am looking at the Nursing to come up with more programmes and create more Departments. You are a gold mine.”
The Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Prof. Mayowa Owolabi agreed with the VC that the Department is capable of transforming into a Faculty having done the University proud at various occasions with insatiable collection of awards, prizes and grants.
Speaking at the occasion, the outgoing Head of Department, Prof. Prisca Adejumo said the project was conceived to solve the problem of adequate learning environment for the students in Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (PGDN) and Open and Distance Learning mode.
She appreciated the VC for his positive contributions towards the project. On completion, the 300 capacity auditorium is expected to be sandwiched at the back with three adjoining laboratories and offices with a small space that will enable the students to interchange between existing building and the new one.
Present at the occasion were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof Kayode Adebowale; Prof Samuel Omokhodion, Director, Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases and Chaplain, University College Hospital and the College of Medicine; Incoming Acting Head of Department, Department of Nursing, Dr. Beatrice Ohaeri; Former Provost, College of Medicine, Prof Akinyinka Omigbodun; Director, Works and Maintenance, Engr Olufemi Adetolu; Prof Adebayo Adejumo, Department of Psychology; Director, University Advancement Centre, Mr. Adebowale Adeosun and the Director, Directorate of Public Communication, Mr. Olatunji Oladejo.
