THEME: GENDER AND HIGHER EDUCATION IN AFRICA: EMERGING ISSUES

The International conference which cuts across various disciplines witnessed the attendance of dignitaries and participants from institutions within Nigeria and overseas country. The conference was opened by the DVC (Admin.) Professor Arinola Sanya who represented the Vice-Chancellor. In her opening speech, she stressed the need for a conference on Gender Issues In Higher Education. Furthermore, she identified the need to participate in a new dawn of gender sensitivity in higher educational system, with particular reference to notable emerging issues she remarked that the University of Ibadan endorses “gender mainstreaming as a global strategy for promoting gender equity”.

Among others in attendance are the following dignitaries:

· Professor J.A. Akinwumi – Conference Chairman (Retired Professor of Agricultural Economics & International Consultant, and Former DVC (Acad.), University of Ibadan))

· Professor Sarah O. Anyanwu – Keynote Speaker (Department of Economics, University of Abuja, Abuja)

· Professor Abiola Odejide – Special Guest of Honour(Retired Professor of Communication and Language Arts, University of Ibadan)

· Professor Pade Badru – Guest of honour(Chair, Department of Social & Behavioural Sciences, Savannah State University, Savannah, Georgia U.S.A)

· Professor Egbokhare (Faculty of Arts)

· Professor Kolawole (Dean Faculty of Education)

· Professor Ayodele Falase (Former Vice Chancellor University of Ibadan).

Conference Objectives:

i. To explore diverse ways in which gender intercepts higher education in Africa in ways previously undocumented;

ii. To provide an inter-disciplinary context for understanding core gender-related issues;

iii. To examine emerging issues and gender-related challenges across African higher education institutions.

The conference came to an end with a Communiqué anchored by Professor Odejide. The Communiqué covered the following areas which include: research, curriculum review, policy issues, decision making, quality of living in higher education and community services. The conference was also used as a platform to send forth the founding P.I of GMO – Professor Abiola Odejide
