UI FORMALISES LONGSTANDING COLLABORATION WITH THE INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TROPICAL AGRICULTURE

The University of Ibadan has formalised its longstanding collaboration with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, fspsp, reiterated at the signing ceremony, that the formalisation will strengthen institutional collaboration in research, innovation, capacity development and resource mobilization.

He asserted that while both institutions had maintained informal working relationships over the years through student research activities, staff interactions and access to research facilities, the MoU would provide a structured mechanism for monitoring progress and expanding collaboration.

Professor Adebowale, therefore, described the collaboration as a strategic framework that would consolidate existing engagements, saying the initiative will create opportunities for broader institutional partnerships.

He disclosed that the MoU was developed through the efforts of committees from both institutions and commended the Deans of the Faculties of Agriculture, and Renewable Natural Resources for their contributions towards the production of the framework document.

Given the comprehensive nature of the University of Ibadan, the VC expressed confidence that the collaboration would strengthen multidisciplinary collaboration, particularly in agricultural research, food security, technology and extension services, noting that scientific discoveries must be translated into practical solutions that can benefit farmers and improve agricultural productivity.

He stated that the partnership would also create opportunities for early career researchers to participate in joint projects, access larger research grants and contribute to innovative solutions in agriculture and related sectors.

The Vice-Chancellor added that the collaboration would generate stronger institutional synergy and deliver lasting benefits for both organisations.

The Deputy Director General, Partnerships for Delivery and Scaling at IITA, Dr Tahirou Abdoulaye, stated that the agreement aligns with the institute's vision to bring mutual initiatives under a unified institutional framework, rather than operating through isolated engagements.

He added that the MoU would support joint research activities, mobilisation of resources, and generate outcomes that would benefit the agricultural sector in Nigeria and the global community.

Dr Abdoulaye disclosed that IITA hosts researchers, undergraduate and postgraduate students from the University of Ibadan on different levels of engagement and expressed optimism that the agreement would increase collaborative opportunities between both institutions.

He described the partnership as a landmark achievement and stated that the MoU would enable a monitoring of the progress of research and capacity building ventures for the benefit of both institutions.
