HISTORY OF THE SPORTS COUNCIL
The Sports Council as a Committee of the Senate was established in 1968 with the sole responsibility for the organisation and administration of sports in this University. The Director of Sports is responsible for the day to day running of sports at the Sports Centre under the Directorate system, which came into existence in1989.There are two existing Sports Complexes in the University and there locations are at:
1. Old Sports Complex:
Embedded between the Faculty of Education and the Kenneth Dike Library and the Faculty of the Social Sciences .The complex accommodates the Sports Centre office with sports facilities spread between the student’s Union building and the Faculty of the Social Sciences (Tennis, Volleyball, Handball, Basketball courts, Hockey Pitch and Cricket Pavilion)
II. The New Sports Complex: located near Obafemi Awolowo Hall and it accommodates three sporting facilities at present:
(a)Football pitch
(b) Rubberized 10 lane track (Tartan).
(c) Gamaliel Onosode Gymnasium
The University of Ibadan Sports Council provides facilities for all the fifteen (15) approved sporting events by Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA). The sports are Athletics (Track & Field), Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Cricket, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Soccer, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis and Volleyball.
The University of Ibadan maintains a well-rounded programme of sporting and athletic activities on campus under the over-all supervision of the Director of Sports, experienced full-time Coaches and Honorary Coaches from among the academic and administrative staff. Sports for which facilities are available include Athletics (Track and field), Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Tennis, Soccer, Swimming, Squash Racket, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Taekwondo and Chess.
There is spirited competition among the halls of residence and faculties for the possession of the championship cups, especially in Soccer and Athletics. Halls of Residence have facilities for various recreational games including Table Tennis, Badminton, Tennis, Volleyball, Chess and mini soccer pitches.
The University is a member of the Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA), the West African Universities Games (WAUG) the Federation of African Universities Sports (FASU) and the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The University participates in both national and international sports competitions organized by these Associations.
It is also good to note that, the emergence of West African Universities Games(WAUG) and Nigerian Universities Games Association(NUGA) games originated from the University of Ibadan in 1965 and 1966 respectively, that was why the first editions were held on the soil of U.I. Also, University of Ibadan has recorded a Landmark by hosting NUGA games at different four editions:

*1986 and
*2002
The responsibility for the administration of Sports in the University is vested in a broad-based Sports Council headed by the Vice-Chancellor. He is usually represented by a Professor. The body serves as the governing body for sports and advises on proper principles of University policy on sports.
Other programmes of Directorate of Sports Council includes:
(a) Intramural and Extramural Sports programme,
(b) Age-group Summer Sports Programme(AGSSP)
(c) The Annual Inter-Halls and Inter-Faculties Programme,
(d) Community Staff Games.
All these inform that, the Sports Council programmes take care of Students, Staff members and the entire University Community.
The University has a Sports Centre which is open at the following times: Monday to Friday, 7.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m and public holidays:
(a) 7- 11.30am for Academic programme,
(b) 12- 4.30pm for Recreational programme,
(c) 4.30-7.00pm Versity Swimmers programme. The Coaches are available at all times to give further information and assistance to students. They can be contacted at the Sports Centre.
Apart from maintaining a sound body which is an asset for advanced thinking and rigorous academic pursuit, students have the added advantage of exposure to modern facilities and techniques through active participation in the variety of sports with teams representing Nigeria in International competitions, like WAUG, FISU and Universiade Games. The University maintains bilateral annual friendly competitions in some selected sports with the University of Ghana, Legon and Universite du Benin, Togo.
Recently, one of our Coaches Ms. Arinye, Cecilia Dora was appointed as the Director of Sports, University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria.

Name: Dr. Odewumi, Goodluck Ibikunle
Present appointment: Director of Sports University of Ibadan.
Academic/Professional Qualification history.
Dr. Odewumi started the journey of obtaining his Academic/Professional qualification from the National Institute for sports, Lagos where be obtained a coaching certificate in Swimming 1976 and moved to the University of Ibadan for a Certificate course in physical and Health Education in 1980. In 1981 he travelled out of the country to the United State for a special coaching certificate course in swimming at the University of South Carolina, Columbia USA. In 1984 he bagged a Diploma in Physical and Health Education at the University of Ibadan. Thereafter in 1996, 1999 and 2005 he bagged his B.Ed, M.Ed and Ph.D in Sports Administration at the University of Ibadan.
Working Experience:
He started as an assistant swimming coach with the Ondo State Sports Council in 1976 and later left for University of Ibadan, Sports Council as swimming coach grade 1 in 1986 and he rose through the rank to become the Director of Sports.
Honours and Distinctions:
He has won various medals, trophies, certificates and honours for the University, State and the Nation as an athlete, Coach and administrator. He is currently the Vice President of Oyo state Tertiary Institution Games Association .Also he is a member of the Technical sub-committee of the Nigeria Swimming Federation.
DIRECTOR’S WELCOME ADDRESS:
Welcome to the University of Ibadan Sports Centre. You will no doubt find that there is more to life here than studying and that is where Sports and Recreation comes in. There are extensive opportunities for sports and recreation, supported by a team of dedicated Staff who provide avenue for activities to suit all ability levels at the University’s Sports Centre.
The University has excellent provision for sporting and recreational activities. The New Complex near Obafemi Awolowo Hall include a football pitch , Fitness Centre and a rubberized (ten lane) track, the only 10 lane track In West Africa and one of the few in Africa.
The facilities probably embedded at the Faculty of the Social Science, Faculty of Education and Kenneth Dike Library includes a 50 metre Olympic size Swimming Pool, Two football pitches, four hard Tennis Courts, hockey pitch, two Volleyball court, Cricket pitch with pavilion, two Squash court and a Mini Multi purpose indoor hall for Badminton, Table Tennis, Taekwondo and Judo. The two sporting Complexes in the University welcome all students for active and recreational sports throughout the week and during vacation.
SPORTING CLUBS IN THE UNIVERSITY
There are sixteen sporting clubs duly registered in the University and this comprises of fifteen (15) approved sporting events by Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) and Literary and debate society. The Literary and DEBATE society is included in our sporting club because of their involvement in the Bilateral Games.

He ran courses in University of Ibadan, Ibadan from Diploma in Physical Education to Doctoral Degree in Sports Organisation and Administration between 1982 and 1999. Was a round Soccer player from the grass root, (Academicals) to the Club level and International level (Nigeria National Team Soccer) 1973 to 1981.
Joined University of Ibadan as Soccer Coach in 1989 and rose to the post of Chief Coach. He holds responsible post in the Nigeria Football Coaches Association, coach U.I. NUGA teams and married with children.

Aloba, Stephen Olusola

He obtained Diploma in Adult education and community development(ADE),Bachelor of science (B.Sc) in psychology and Post Graduate Diploma in Institute of Education(PGD) in 1997,2003 and 2010,University of Ibadan, respectively .During these periods, Mr Aloba was actively involved in sports especially Judo game ,while he won laurels for the University, States (Oyo and Delta )and the Country, because he represented the Country at the World University Game (FISU)at Beijing, China (2001) Mallorca ,Spain (1999) and Africa University Games (FASU) 2004 with a Gold medal. Presently he is the first Graduate resident Judo Coach in the University with a National “A” Judo Referee and a Black Belt.

He stated his basketball carrier as a teenager with the Oluyole warriors of Ibadan and after playing for two seasons he moved to the Islanders of Lagos and after three seasons he moved to Delta Force basketball club of Asaba.He finally came back home to play for Oluyole warriors while playing for this team he was also appointed the Honorary Coach to handling Basket ball for the UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN.In 2007 he was employed as the first resident Basketball coach of the University. Mr. Momoh is a graduate of Industrial Chemistry from the University of Technology Akure and also possessed a coaching Certificate from the Dept. of Human kinetics University of Ibadan.

He bagged His first degree B.ed in physical and Health Education in 1992 at the University of Ibadan, He also bagged a grade one coaching certificate in Athletics at the National institute for sports Surulere, Lagos, 1995. During his studentship in the University he represented the university in various competitions. He was the captain of the university of Ibadan athletics team between 1991 & 1992.
He became the track and field coach in 1995 till date. He was also one of the track and field coaches to the World university games 1997, held in Sicily, Italy and Nigeria won two gold medals.
Since he became a Coach in 1995 his athletes have won laurels for both the University and Nigeria in various competitions national and international
