Professor Augustine Eyiwunmi Olumuyiwa Falaye was born on 25 June, 1952 in Owo, Ondo State to the family of Late Pa Jonathan Adebiyi Falaye and Madam Janet Oluwakemi Falaye (Nee Adedimila). He attended St. Patrick’s College, Oka-Akoko for his secondary school education, where he obtained his West African School Certificate in 1969. He distinguished himself in swimming and reading and was the Library Prefect in the college.
He worked briefly at the Cocoa Research Institute, Idi-Ayunre, Ibadan, before undertaking a Diploma Course at the University of Ife (Now Obafemi Awolowo University), School of Agriculture, Akure, completed in 1976.
Professor Falaye proceeded to Plymouth Polytechnic now University, Plymouth, England in 1977, where he obtained B.Sc Fishery Science in 1981. He is the first Nigerian to hold the degree in Fishery Science from that institution in the United Kingdom. He moved to the University of Stirling, Scotland for his M.Sc degree in Aquaculture and Fisheries Management in 1982.
Professor Falaye served briefly at the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR), Victoria Island, Lagos in 1982 before transferring to the University of Ibadan. He was employed as an Assistant Lecturer, in the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Management, University of Ibadan in October 1983. He was promoted to Lecturer II in 1986, lecturer I in 1989, Senior Lecturer in 1992 and Professor in 1997.
Professor Falaye has been a vibrant researcher and lecturer and has been engaged in community development. Currently, he has 102 publications, consisting of books, journal articles, referred conference proceedings and techni-cal reports. He has successfully supervised 15 Ph.D Theses, 48 M.Sc Dissertations and several B.Sc special projects. As a diligent research scientist, Professor Falaye has received scholarships, awards and fellowship in his academic career. He enjoyed the Ondo State Government Scholarships for his degree programmes in the United Kingdom. He received the University Senate Research Grant (three times), the British Technical Aid award was provided for his research work at the Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, Scotland.
He was a recipient of the prestigious British Royal Society Fellowship for his research on the Nutrition of Malawi Tilapia, (Oreochromis karongae) at the School of Biological Sciences, University of North Wales in Bangor, Wales.
Professor Falaye has actively participated in University administration. He has served in many capacities including:
· Sub-Dean (Forestry), Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry (1990-1992);
· Ag Head of Department, Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Management (1994-1996);
· Head of Department, Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Management (2003-2006);
· Member of Senate (1994 till date);
· Hall Master, Balewa Hall (1997-2000);
· Member of the Governing Council;
· Chairman, Council Committee on Security (2000-2004);
· Dean of Students (2006-2012);
· Chairman, Committee of Dean of Students of Nigerian Universities (CODESANU) (2011 to 2013).
Professor Falaye has made significant contributions to community development at National, Regional and Global levels. He was a member of NUC Accreditation teams to universities in the North-East, North-West, South East, and Central Nigeria. He was a member/chairman of several Environmental Impact Assessment Meetings of the Federal Ministry of Environment.
Professor Falaye was a member of the Presidential Committee on Fisheries Development and Alternate Chair-man of Aquaculture (2004-2006), that provided the Blueprint for Fisheries development in Nigeria.
He served as External Examiner to University of Agriculture Abeokuta; Federal University of Technology, Akure; Federal University of Technology, Minna; Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos and Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ayetoro Campus.
He has also been External Assessor to overseas Universities including, University of North Bengal, Raja Rammohunpur, India; Vidyasagar University, Paschim Medinipur, India; University of Ghana, Legon, Ghana, and University for Development Studies, Tamale, Ghana. He was also a visiting lecturer at the University of North Wales, Bangor, Wales, United Kingdom. He served as a member of Panel of Assessors for promotion of professors in Osun State University, Lagos State University and Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
As an expert, Professor Falaye was a consultant on UNICEF Fisheries Production Nutrition Programme in 1992. He was invited as a consultant by FAO, Africa Regional Office, Accra, Ghana for the preparation of Fisheries Development in Africa and Technical Interaction in Aquaculture in 1996. Professor Falaye was the State and Coordinating Consultant for the World Bank-Funded State Environmental Action Plan (SEAP) for Adamawa, Bauchi and Taraba States in 1996. He was Education Tax Fund (ETF) Fisheries Consultant on the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (UNAAB) Centre of Excellence Integrated Fish Production Project (2001-2004). He was the consultant on the ECOWAS Fund Accelerated Artisanal Fish Production Project of the Federal Department of Fisheries, Federal Ministry of Agriculture in 2006-2007.
Professor Falaye is a Member of Stakeholder Council of the World’s Marine Stewardship Council (2000 till date) and participated in the Governance Review of the Council in Washington DC, USA. He is a member of the Board of Africa-Fishnet of NEPAD (2010 till date). He has also recently been appointed as a Member of the African Union (AU) Aquaculture Think-Tank (2013).
Professor Falaye is a Presiding Elder in The Apostolic Church - A Fisherman and a Fisher of men.
Professor Falaye is happily married to Dr. (Mrs.) Folajogun Veronica Falaye and they are blessed with three lovely children – Samuel Oluwawunmi, Peter Oluwaforijimi, and Esther Boluwatife.
