  • BRIEF ABOUT NRSA

    The Nigerian Rural sociological Association was formed on January 7 1981. The inaugural congress of the association was held from November 7-11, 1983. It is a broad based professional association with membership across wide spectrum of institutions including universities, agricultural research institutes and other agricultural and rural development agencies in private and public sectors. This year’s congress will mark the 21st Annual congress to be held since the inception of the association.

    OBJECTIVES OF THE CONGRESS

    The general aim of this year’s congress revolves round examining challenges and approaches germane to sustainable rural development in sub-Saharan Africa for the realisation of the millennium development goals and agricultural transformation specifically in Nigeria and in Africa in general.

    Specific objectives of the congress include

  • Critical assessment of multi-disciplinary interventions (farm, non-farm, value addition, adult literacy, community development, health etc) in rural and agricultural transformation;
  • Profiling rural infrastructure that engenders sustainable environmental management;
  • Examining rural livelihoods and welfare and poverty alleviation programmes and policies already in place or being envisaged for agricultural transformation that will ensure poverty reduction and food security;
  • Assessment of leadership, governance and policy issues for sustainable rural and agricultural transformation;
  • Gender and generational issues in sustainable rural development
  • Draw communiqué at the end of the congress on all issues above for policy intervention that will fast track programmes of government gear towards rural and agricultural transformation in Nigeria and countries of sub-Saharan Africa.
