Key Qualifications

Preamble

Prof. E. Adenike Emeke who had her university education at the prestigious Nigeria’s premier

University, University of Ibadan, obtained her research-based doctoral degree in the discipline of educational evaluation in 1996; this is after studying Science Education (Zoology) and Guidance & Counselling at my Bachelors and Master degree programmes. I became a professor on 1st Oct, 2007.I have been carrying out research and teaching at the tertiary level for well over 25 years as well as being involved in contractual evaluation of programmes & projects and consulting services. I have also served in various capacities at different levels.

Services at Local, National and International Levels

In the University of Ibadan, I have held many administrative positions which include being Head of Unit, Chair of Committees, member of various Committees of the Senate of University of Ibadan (which is the highest but one policy organ of the University of Ibadan). My administrative ability within the University was recognized when I was made the Warden of the Queen Elizabeth II Hall of the University of Ibadan, a position that was renewed three times because of my successful performance in dealing with many thorny issues associated with tendering the affairs of vibrant youth. Anyone familiar with the University of Ibadan knows that the Queen Elizabeth II Hall is the Hall of preferred choice for all female students coming to the University and it takes some level of administrative know-how to successfully deal with the pressure coming from parents, university staff and the ladies themselves. To the glory of God, the Hall witnessed a number of positive achievements and progressive ventures to the Hall and to the life of the ladies during my tenure.

In 1989, the Government of Oyo State recognized me and appointed me a member of one of her Boards. Specifically, I served as a Director on the Board of the State’s Trans Assurance Company, a position I held for 3years, thus ending my tenure in 2001. During my tenure at the Board and with prudent management by and harmonious working relationship between the members of the Board, a new investment oriented building was erected for the Company. During the period of service, my co-Board members appointed me as the alternate Chair of the Board, thus taking responsibility anytime the Chair was absent. In recognition of my contributions during my tenure, I was conferred with the honour of Justice of Peace. So, I am presently a JP and can hold fort in certain juridical matters. The Oyo State Government has also at various times appointed me as member of the Governing Board of some of her schools. I am also a member of the Governing Board of the private schools owned by the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan.

I have served on some Committees of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and I have also contributed through the invitation of the Council to the running of the Council’s Journal, WAJVEM.

At the international level, I was appointed as the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Education of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), in Nairobi, Kenya. This appointment was made 6months into the period of my sabbatical year in the University. I was also appointed to be a member of the University Management Board and a number of other Committees. These appointments were made in recognition of my valuable contributions to the affairs of the Faculty and the University.

Teaching and Supervision

I have been teaching courses in Research Methods, Tests & Measurement, Educational Evaluation, Construction of Questionnaires and Rating Scalesas well as Evaluation & Monitoring of Programmes and Projectsat the post-graduate level. I pioneered, along with two of my colleagues, the teaching of the course on Qualitative Research Methods and Techniques of Seminar Presentation at the International Centre for Educational Evaluation, University of Ibadan. I have successfully supervised to completion the research work of seventeen (17) Ph.D. candidates, over 20 Master level candidates, 10 undergraduate degree candidates and many Postgraduate Diploma degree candidates. I have taught Counseling Psychology Courses and Special Education Coursesat the Diploma and Degree Levels.

My teaching career at the university level has spanned through the diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

I supervised Teaching Practice of the Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, in the area of Science Education from 1981 to 2006. I moderate the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) Examinations and Teaching Practice of the Colleges of Education affiliated to the University of Ibadan through the Institute of Education. The diversity of my research interest and my belief in broad-base research has enabled me to have supervised the theses of students on topics with gender components and also collaborated with colleagues to carry out researches on gender main-streaming as well as other gender issues.

Research and Evaluation

Prof. Emeke is experienced in providing leadership in educational research and evaluation and in serving as programme leader in educational research methods in a University environment.

I played the same role in the project: National Assessment of Educational Performance (NAEP)in 2007. In 2011, I lead a team of researchers at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), Kenya on three research projects. I also facilitated workshops at the University.

Research Funding

Prof Emeke is experienced in preparing applications for and securing research funding from external agencies. For example, I was part of a team that solicited fund from the International Association for Educational Assessment (IAEA)in 2005, 2007; and in 2008.. . In Nov,2008, I led a team from the Institute of Education to submit a proposal to the African Development Bank (AfDB) for funding for aBaseline Study and Participatory Rapid Assessment Covering Gender, Teacher/Instructor Gap Analysis, Labour Market and Informal Sector Profiles, tenable in 2009. The Project which was worth over N17million has been completed, report submitted and commendation given by the AfDB..

I was the leader of the team that not only solicited for the fund for the international training workshop for participants from 15 African countries and 1 European country, but I also led the team of writers for the training manual which is undergoing the process of being adopted as a training manual for other member countries of the International Association for Educational Evaluation (IAEA). I presented papers at the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Conference of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA) held in Cameroon, Abuja and Kenya for those respective years. I was invited as a commissioned paper presenter to handle the topic The Challenges of Assessment of Candidates with Special Needs at the 2010 Conference of the Association (i.e. AEAA).

(ii) In Progress

(a) Are the Learning Styles of Low Achievers Different from the Learning Styles of High Achievers?

Learning style, among other things, refers to the tendency by an individual to use certain processing and regulation activities spontaneously when learning or processing information especially within a learning situation. Learning style can be a determining factor of a student’s academic achievement. Since both cursory and empirical evidences support the existence of low and high achievers in the educational system the study’s conceptualization is that it would be advantageous to find out if there are differences in the learning styles of high and low achievers, with a view to determining the possibility of training low achievers to be skilled in the acquisition of achievement enhancing learning skills. Literature has been reviewed, one instrument was developed and one was adopted, data has been collected and analysis is about being carried out.

(b) A Comparative Analysis of Learning Styles Prevalent among Students in

Two Disciplines in Two Cultural Settings.

Co Researcher

Dr. Catherine Senok, College of Medicine, University of Sharjah,

P.O.Box 27272, Sharjah, United Arab Emirate.

In the pursuit of my research interest in learning styles, I am collaborating with Dr Senok, a medical doctor in the United Arab Emirates. The study aims at comparing the learning styles that are prevalent among students in the two disciplines of medicine and education with the aim of providing answers to the questions of:

· Are learning styles discipline influenced?

· Does cultural setting have effect on the learning styles of students?

We have written the proposal and have developed the data collection instruments. Dr Senok is working to complete the process of getting approval from the Ethical Committee of her University; thereafter the data will be collected.

(c). The Relationship of Learning Styles and the Big Five Personality Factors

That every individual has a relatively stable component of the self often tagged the personality is no longer controvertible. Researchers have attempted to categorize personality factors and the Big Five classification can be said to be widely accepted in literature. The primary goal of this study is to investigate if there is any relationship between personality using the Big five categorization and the learning styles of students. The study is at the stage of the development and validation of the research measures to be used.
