UI DVC ACADEMIC PROFESSOR ADERONKE MOJISOLA BAIYEROJU RETIRES
The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic of the University of Ibadan, Professor Aderonke Mojisola Baiyeroju, retires from the service of the university today, Wednesday, 13 August, 2025 having reached the retirement age of 70.
Until her retirement, she served in the capacity of Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic of the University, with effect from Tuesday, 09 November 2021.
She was born into the family of Late David Olatunde and Marian Olutunde Agbeja in Benin City, Nigeria, but of Ijesha origins.
She had her elementary education at UMC Demonstration School, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.
She attended St. Anne's School, Molete, Ibadan, for her secondary school education, followed by Advanced Level at the Queen's School, Ibadan, and the Comprehensive High School, Aiyetoro, Ogun State, Nigeria.
She gained admission to the first prestigious medical school in Nigeria at the University of Ibadan and obtained her MBBS degree in 1979. She proceeded to the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in Glasgow where she obtained the Diploma in Ophthalmology of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland in 1982 and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow in 1985. She was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) in 1989, the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons in 1989, the Fellowship of the International College of Surgeons in 1997, and the Fellowship of the Nigerian Academy of Medicine in 2020.
Prof. Baiyeroju has been working in Nigeria since 1987 at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, and was promoted to the rank of Professor of Ophthalmology in 1998. She is also an Honorary Consultant to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, where she teaches medical students and resident doctors in ophthalmology.
Her main subspecialty is Paediatric Ophthalmology, though she also has an interest in Glaucoma. She was the acting head of her department from 1995-1997, Professor & Head of Department from 1999-2003. She was appointed the Deputy Provost of the College of Medicine, the University of Ibadan from 2006 to 2010.
The retiring DVC has run various grants in her career including a WHO grant to establish Eye Care for Children in Oyo State, Nigeria from 2004-2008 as well as a grant from the Standard Chartered Bank (International) to reduce blindness in children in the South West, Nigeria under the Seeing is Believing (SiB) project, executed by CBM Nigeria between 2017 and 2020.
She was elected as Faculty Chairman of the Faculty of Ophthalmology of the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) from 2003 to 2007, Member of Council of WACS from 2007 to 2013, Assistant Honorary Treasurer of WACS from February 2013 to 2017, and Honorary Treasurer of the West African College of Surgeons from 2017 to 2021.
Professor Baiyeroju is a keen sportswoman, who won numerous medals in various competitions including a gold medal in the high jump at the 1977 ECOWAS Games and also rose to the Nigerian number 4 seed in squash racket in 1978. She was awarded the University of Ibadan scholarship for being the best female athlete all through her 5-year training as a medical student from 1974 to 1979.
She was inducted into the University of Ibadan Sports Hall of Fame in 1990 for her outstanding contribution to the development of sports in the university. She was also named “Brownite of Honour” in 1997 by the Alexander Brown Hall, University of Ibadan, for her outstanding contribution to the development of sports in the hall.
She has attended numerous scientific conferences and has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals, nationally and internationally.
The retiring Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) is married to Brigadier General Akin Baiyeroju (Rtd), and they are blessed with children.
