MESSAGE FRO THE DIRECTOR

The need to host this website became necessary as a result of the demands made by past and present students of the International Centre for Educational Evaluation (ICEE), Institute of Education as well as our collaborators at both National and International levels. Perhaps more than ever before, many people want to know the activities of the Institute and how to participate either as students or corporate organizations. The web information therefore is part of our effort to disseminate information about the Institute.

The Institute of Education, University of Ibadan was founded in 1956. Since inception, it has undergone tremendous changes. The most obvious is the separation of the Faculty from the Institute. The Institute became autonomous from the Faculty of Education during 1976/77 academic session, and since 1992, enjoyed the same status as those of the Faculties in the University of Ibadan. In accordance with its autonomous status, the Director of the Institute is a member of the Committee of Provosts, Deans and Directors of the University, and senior members of the academic staff, including the Sub-Dean (Postgraduate), represents the Institute at various committee and board of the postgraduate school. It is important to note that several members of staff of the Institute are members of various committees of this University. These are some indications of the autonomous and vibrant status of the Institute.

Prior to the establishment of the ICEE in 1973 as a research and teaching unit in the Institute, the main functions of the Institute included:

v The training of teachers

v The promotion of educational research, and

v Carrying out advisory work for other educational organizations including supervision of schools, teachers and pupil at various educational levels.

Since 1973 when the ICEE was established, the functions of the Institute through the centre now include:

v The training of evaluators for the African Continent.

v Research (with emphasis on evaluation techniques and instrumentals and

v Contractual evaluation of specific educational projects.

Over the years, the Institute has achieved all these functions and even more. In terms of Training of Teachers, there are now four Colleges of Education that are affiliated to the Institute. These are:

1. Rivers State College of Education, Port-Harcourt.

2. osun State College of Education, Ilesa

3. Tai Solarin College of Education, Ijebu-Ode

4. St. Augustine College of Education, Lagos.

In addition, more colleges are seeking affiliation with the University through the Institute. In all the affiliated institutions, we carry out advisory work, moderation of examinations, and supervisions of students and teachers.

These programmes complement our various academic programmes for the training of evaluators and curriculum developers at the Postgraduate Diploma, masters and doctorate levels.

The involvement of the Institute in National and International research is evident also the Institute has continued to fulfill its obligation of promoting educational research.

Best wishes.
