Professor Adeyinka Abideen Aderinto received his primary school education at Abadina Primary school, University of Ibadan between 1973 and 1978. He started his secondary education at the Ede Muslim Grammar School, in 1978 and completed it in 1983 at Abadina College, University of Ibadan. Professor Aderinto gained direct entry admission to the University of Ibadan, Ibadan in 1985 for a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology, and graduated in 1988 with a Second Class Honours Upper Division. At the University of Ibadan, he won the Professor Okediji Memorial Prize for the Best Overall Student in Sociology at Both 200 and 300 levels, and in 1988, won the Sociology Department prize for the best graduating student.

The new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Aderinto enrolled for a Master of Science Degree in Sociology, and completed it in January 1991 with a Grade Point Average of 67.0 which was the second highest in the class. During the programme, he was elected the President of the Sociology Graduate Students’ Association. Aderinto was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Sociology in January 1997.

Professor Aderinto started his teaching career in 1992 when he was appointed an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Nigeria and rose to become a Professor of Sociology in the same University in 2009. Professor Aderinto’s main areas of teaching and research are Deviance, Social Problems and Childhood Studies.

Professor Aderinto has held many administrative and academic positions at the University of Ibadan and outside it. These included:

  • Sub-Dean, Arts & Humanities, The Postgraduate School, University of Ibadan.

  • Dean, The Postgraduate School, University of Ibadan.

Professor Aderinto is an active researcher and has been part of many collaborative research programmes. For instance, he was the Co-coordinator, Adolescent Sexuality Study, Social Sciences and Reproductive Health Research Network, funded by the Ford Foundation, Coordinator, Strategic Leadership in HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control, Social Sciences and Reproductive Health Research network, Investigator, and later Coordinator, Research Alliance to Combat HIV/AIDS (a collaborative research programme between the University of Ibadan, Ibadan and Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, USA.

He has served as Consultant on various projects as follows: a) Consultant, Baseline Survey: UNFPA 5th Country Programme of Assistance to Ogun State, b) Consultant, National Action Committee on AIDS, Abuja, c) Socio-economic consultant, Environmental Impact Assessment of OML 53 Exploratory Drilling Programme, d) Socio-economic consultant, Environmental Impact Assessment of ABA PHASE II Gas Project, e) Socio-Economic Consultant, Environmental Impact Assessment for the site preparation Activities of the Escravos Gas-To-Liquid project, f) Socio-Economic Consultant, Environmental Basement Study of Tar-Sand Areas of Ondo State, g) Socio-Economic Consultant, Environmental Impact Assessment of Cassava processing Factory at Umuchem, Rivers States, h) Consultant, the World Bank Social Accountability Framework, and i)Consultant, UNAIDS HIV/AIDS Information Needs Assessment.

The new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) has also been a recipient of many awards spanning his student days till now. He won the Sociology Department Prize for the Best Graduating Student in 1988 and the Professor Okediji Memorial Prize for the Best Overall Student in Sociology at Both 200 and 300 levels. He was also an awardee of many research grants such as the Small Grant Thesis Writing Competition of the Council for the Development of Social Research in Africa (CODESRIA), the Social Science Council of Nigeria’s Project on University Governance, the Population Research Fund Project funded by the World Bank, Combating Childhood Communicable Diseases Project, USAID, the Inter African Committee (IAC) Nigeria Projects on the Girl-child Situation, Widowhood and Wife Inheritance and Domestic Violence Against Women in Nigeria. Professor Aderinto participated in the Fullbright/USIA Summer Institute on the Cultural Geography of the United States held at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge , and the Child and Youth Studies Institute of CODESRIA, in Dakar . He was also a grantee of the Macarthur Foundation Fund for Leadership Development, and a fellow of the Bill and Melinda Gates Summer Institute on Reproductive Health and Development, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, MD.

Professor Aderinto is a member of many professional associations namely the International Sociological Association, the Council for the Development of Social Research in Africa, Dakar, Senegal, African Sociological Association, Union of African Population Studies, the Nigeria Anthropological and Sociological Association, and the South African Sociological Association, among many others. He is also a widely travelled man having attended conferences, research meetings, courses in countries in North America, Europe and Africa.

Professor Aderinto has published widely in his areas of research, and currently has over 80 publications in books and journals, and some others already accepted for publication.

Professor Adeyinka Abideen Aderinto is happily married with children.
